Armageddon … or Time to Work Harder?

On November 8th, I found this image on my timeline.

Facebook’s image display algorithm truncated the picture on the right. I was able to extract the whole thing. The Book of Revelation … also called The Book of The Apocalypse … is the last book of the Christian Bible. It is the only book of prophecy in the New Testament.

Verse 18 goes on to say, “Here is wisdom. Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for the number is that of a man; and his number is six hundred and sixty-six.“

This got me to thinking, “Is the number 666 connected with Donald Trump and his MAGA movement in any way?” Of course, being fond of gathering statistics and playing with numbers, I found such a connection.

If you take the ordinal numbers of the letters of the alphabet (A=1, B=2, C=3, … X=24, Y=25, and Z=26), multiply each by the number of occurrences of each letter in the phrase Make America Great Again and the names Donald John Trump and James David Vance, then add those products together. you get the value (you guessed it) 666.

No, this isn’t the (necessarily) End. The preceding section is, after all, satire. The Facebook entry and my alphanumeric manipulation are examples of the weak spot of obscure or encoded prophecy. It is often possible to start with the prophecy and find ways to apply it to events in the present.^[2] There is hope, but it’s going to be an extremely bumpy and very unpleasant ride.

According to the Book of Revelation in the New Testament of the Christian Bible, Armageddon is the prophesied location of a gathering of armies for a battle during the end times, which is variously interpreted as either a literal or a symbolic location. The term is also used in a generic sense to refer to any end-of-the-world scenario. In Islamic theology, Armageddon is also mentioned in Hadith as the Greatest Armageddon or Al-Malhama Al-Kubra (the great battle).

FWIW, the image that introduces this article serves well as an “End of the World” analogue, but it actually represents one of the major theories of the formation of our Moon. The idea is that a Mars-sized object slammed into the primordial … an still partially molten … Earth. The heavier parts of the amalgam sank to the center of the combined mass at the same time it blew a lot of lighter material into space. That material fell into orbit around the larger mass and, eventually, coalesced into the Moon. This accident was important to us … and all life on Earth since it cooled. Without the Moon’s help in stabilizing our planet’s axis and , thereby, regulating our seasons, life on Earth would probably be impossible.
