In case you didn’t know, 2024 is an election year. There’s a seemingly endless flow of discussion about “the polls” on the news channels. Where are the pollsters getting their information? Who are they talking to?
They’re definitely not talking to me. Every on-line, e-mail, or snail mail poll that comes my way ends with a request for money. The electronic ones have no way to submit your answers without a donation. (I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that nobody looks at the responses unless you send a BIG donation.) The ones that arrive through the post office want information that I don’t want to give them. (Information like an e-mail address or a phone number. That makes it easier for them to ask for future donations.) Maybe the pollsters are trying to reach me through all the “mystery calls” that I get on both of my phones.
Mystery numbers can be almost anything imaginable … “gimme” calls from charities; pollsters; realtors wanting to sell me a home or buy mine; all sorts of sales people; scammers; etc. My landline contract came with Caller Id. If I were to see a caller id like Political Poll or Pollster, I’d answer. If they left a message, I’d call them back. If they asked me for a donation at the end, I’d say, “No, I’ve given as much as I can,” and hang up. At least, I’d know that my opinion had been heard. If they choose to ignore me because I didn’t “pay up”, that’s on them.
My cellphone has neither Caller Id nor Voicemail. (I don’t want to spend money for extra features on a backup phone.) If my cellphone doesn’t display a name from my contact list, I ignore it … and block the number. The landline is a telephone. My cellphone is a little computer that just happens to be able to have a phone app. (I know. To many people, I’m a troglodyte. Perhaps I am, but landlines are a lot more reliable than cellphones. I may be old-fashioned … but at least, I know what the word “troglodyte” means. π)
What about you? Have you been polled … by someone who seems to care about your opinion rather than your money? If so, what’s your secret? I’m begining to feel left out. π’

Well … I was finally asked to participate in a political poll today (June 30, 2024) It didn’t even ask for money at the end. π It came to me as a text message and was only a state poll, but it made me feel wanted. π₯°
